Medical Education

Medical education has developed into the extremely robust and diverse field. It encompasses graduate education of medical students, postgraduate training of interns and residents as well as continuous medical education of established clinicians. Clinical education occurs in numerous settings. It includes traditional classroom based lectures, bedside learning and the self-study through reading the medical literature. 

 

While learning in the clinical setting is the cornerstone of medical education, other forms of acquiring medical expertise are important as well. Clinical teacher plays a pivotal role in all those forms of medical learning. Clinical educator is expected to deliver the comprehensive, well organized and informative lectures, He/she is charged with teaching during the hospital rounds and outpatient encounters. Moreover, good clinical instructor guides his/her students through the self-learning process. 

 

Academic institutions increasingly utilize the concept of medical teaching portfolios to assure that their faculty members are competent teachers. A teaching portfolio is defined as a set of documents and multimedia materials reflecting the teaching performance of a faculty member.
